82. Szkocja



Po lewej widzimy Zamek w Edynburgu (ang. Edinburgh Castle) jest jedną z najpotężniejszych i najstarszych fortec w Wielkiej Brytanii. Jest to symbol nie tylko samego Edynburga ale i całej Szkocji. Forteca znajduje się na szczycie monumentalnego skalistego wzniesienia (120 metrów n.p.m.) w samym centrum miasta.
Historia pierwszych śladów fortyfikacji na górze zamkowej sięga IX wieku p.n.e. Większa część obecnych murów budowli pochodzi z XVI wieku, z godnym uwagi wyjątkiem w postaci Kaplicy Św. Małgorzaty z wczesnego XII wieku. Kaplica ta jest dziś najstarszym budynkiem w Edynburgu.
Edynburski Zamek jest jedną z niewielu obecnych twierdz, które posiadają swój własny garnizon wojskowy. Obecnie jest on jednak używany głównie podczas ceremonii oraz oficjalnych parad szkockiego wojska.
Po prawej mamy Old Town ktore jest sercem średniowiecznego Edynburga, posiada większą część jego historycznych zabytków, w tym Zamek, Pałac Holyrood oraz Katedrę St Giles. Znajduje się tu również dom Johna Knoxa, który wprowadził protestantyzm w Szkocji oraz pomnik Waltera Scotta – sławnego pisarza i poety szkockiego.
Royal Mile jest główną ulicą starówki, która łączy ze sobą dwie królewskie rezydencje Edynburga: Edinburgh Castle i Pałac Holyrood. Zawiera w sobie trzy najważniejsze ciągi ulic – Castlehill, Lawnmarket i High Street. "Królewska Mila" jest najchętniej odwiedzanym przez turystów miejscem Edynburga.
Na południu starówki ważnym punktem są także Cowgate i Grassmarket. Okolica ta jest pełna pubów, lokali rozrywkowych i antykwariatów.

On the left we see the Edinburgh Castle is one of the most powerful and oldest fortresses in Britain. It is not only the symbol of Edinburgh but throughout Scotland. Fortress sits atop a rocky promontory monumental (120 meters above sea level) in the city center.
History of the first signs of fortifications at the top of the castle dates back to the ninth century BC Most of the existing walls of the building dates from the sixteenth century, with the notable exception being the Chapel of St. Margaret from the early twelfth century. The chapel is now the oldest building in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Castle is one of the few current strongholds, which have their own military garrison. However, it is now used mainly during official ceremonies and parades the Scottish army.
On the right we have the Old Town which is the heart of medieval Edinburgh, has most of its historical sights, including the Castle, Holyrood Palace and St Giles Cathedral. There is also a house of John Knox, who introduced Protestantism in Scotland, and Walter Scott monument - a famous Scottish writer and poet.
Royal Mile is the main street of the old town, which connects the two royal residences Edinburgh: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Includes the three main strings streets - Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street. "Royal Mile" is the most visited place by tourists Edinburgh.
In the south of the old town is also an important point of Cowgate and Grassmarket. The area is full of pubs, entertainment and antique shops.
